Today a delightful mix of historic buildings jostles with modern shops and arcades. Tuesday is market day, and the town hosts many markets and fairs throughout the year. Guided walks of the town start from the Tourist Information Centre or the rail station. This thriving community has much to offer everyone and properties to let in Alton are much in demand.

The market town lies 18 miles north east of Winchester and for many years was famous for its hops and breweries. There is much cultural wealth with Jane Austen’s literary home at Chawton and the museums of William Curtis as well as the home of Gilbert White the naturalists and the Oates Museum at Selbourne.

Both cricket and running are particularly active with Clubs based in Alton. There are several excellent Golf Clubs nearby and a good leisure centre with swimming pool, squash and tennis courts etc in the town.

Surrounded by breathtakingly beautiful countryside, long distance footpaths and other rights of way offer many opportunities for walking and cycling.Alton gives good access to the M3 being approximately 5 miles south of junction 6, the A31 for Guildford, A32 to Fareham, Portsmouth, Southampton and the south coast. Heathrow is approximately 45 miles and Gatwick approximately 50 miles. There is a main line railway station to London (Waterloo approximately 1 hour) that ensures house rentals in Alton are popular with commuters.

There are excellent local Junior/Infant Schools with Nurseries throughout the area and houses to rent within range of the popular Alton Sixth Form College are highly sought after. Alton Convent is a much admired private school with Bedales, Churchers College, Lord Wandsworth, Daneshill, Sherfield, St Swithin and Winchester College being some of the nearby private schools.
